Feng Shui for the Holidays! Where Do I Put My Christmas Tree?
By Fay Chapple

Everyone loves beautiful Christmas trees but sometimes they can be a challenge in terms of Feng Shui. A traditional Christmas tree is an evergreen which is quite spiky in nature and therefore very "yang". A yang object can sometimes disturb the natural energy flow within a room, therefore the most important step in choosing a tree is too make sure it is not too large or overwhelming for the room. If you can feel the needles in your face when your sitting in the chair next to the tree - it's probably too big!

Bright beautiful ornaments make for a great tree but try to soften the yang energy by including fabric bows or garlands as well.

Everyone loves bright shiny star on top of the tree but the points again can create some issues if your tree sits anywhere but the south. If your tree does reside outside the south sector try to top your tree with a star that is surrounded by a circle (thus softening the sharp yang corners. If your tree is in the South - go for the biggest star you can find! and add plenty of bright lights as well! If your tree is found in the North West - in your mentors section - a beautiful angel will be just what your looking for to top your tree!

The colours of blue, green, red and any of the metallic's cover all five elements in Feng Shui so if you can use all these colours on your tree than you will be adding to the natural balance that exists in the universe.

The beautiful scent of these trees help to bring a calming and peaceful energy to the home. Treat the tree like you would a bouquet of flowers - ensure you keep it in water in order for it to thrive throughout the holiday. A tree that begins to wilt (just like a bouquet of flowers) is full of negative energy and should be removed.

Are you worried that an artificial tree is not good in Feng Shui terms? Don't be. Arterial trees are like artificial flowers in the eyes of Feng Shui. Providing that the tree looks real and is not a dried tree (like dried flowers) the arterial tree is just as effective.

So where is the best place to put a Christmas Tree? Ideally a tree located in the East Sector of your home is best. The East symbolizes family & health, the element of wood and the colour of green. However we are not always able to put the tree in the ideal sector.

Wherever you place your tree make sure you customize it to live within the elements found in the direction and ensure that it is not too close to where anyone is sitting (as this will make them feel uncomfortable because of the strong yang energy).

• In the south decorate your tree with reds, bright lights and stars - all in keeping with the element of fire

• In the North - Use beautiful blues and sophisticated blacks as well as mini snow globes or icicles (all symbolizing the water element

• In the West - Metals abound here - Decorate with metallic ornaments of gold, silver and brass mixed in with some white ribbon. Do you really want to go all the way - a sleek white artificial tree would be perfect here!

• In the Northwest - Another big metal area so same as the west

• In the Northeast - Earth colours of yellow and brown activate this area so add ceramic or stones ornaments and create an earthy feel

• In the Southwest - Earth colours of yellow and brown work well here too add some crystals to help enhance romance here. Also ornaments in pairs!

• In the Southeast - Greens are beautiful here so another good location for your Christmas tree. Add the richness of gold (ornaments shaped like coins) will enhance your wealth luck here!
